In the bathroom, one element draws the eye more than any other: the mirror. It is more than just a functional accessory – indispensable for skincare, shaving or applying makeup – it is also a star when it comes to furnishing the bathroom.
How to select the most appropriate bathroom mirror When looking for bathroom mirror ideas, you need to consider shapes, proportions, lighting, finishes and functionality: all these aspects need to be considered and assessed carefully.
In this article, we will guide you through ideas and proposals from Arcom to help you find the mirror that best reflects your style and your needs.
The first question you need to ask yourself is whether you want a basic mirror or a multifunctional one. That is, do you want a flat model or one with a cabinet hidden behind it?
Basic mirrors, whether with or without a frame (such as flush models with polished edges), are perfect for people who are looking for a clean and minimalist aesthetic. Their subtle lines, lightweight geometries and elegant symmetries help create a harmonious and modern bathroom.
But, if you are looking to maximise bathroom functionality, storage mirror units can be very practical. Thanks to the cabinet hidden behind the mirror’s doors, these models help keep everything – from beauty accessories to personal hygiene products – in order (and within arm’s reach).
While this solution is especially useful in small bathrooms, it is also perfect for larger spaces, especially if the storage mirror is built into the wall – an option that offers the greatest functionality while taking up the least amount of space.
And, if you are looking for something bigger, another alternative is the wardrobe with mirrored doors: an elegant and space-saving option that combines storage and reflection, creating an illusion of more space while offering a full-length mirror
When looking for bathroom mirror ideas, shape and size are essential elements in defining the space’s aesthetics and guaranteeing a visual sense of balance. A carefully selected mirror is proportionate to the washbasin above which it is positioned and to the space available in the room, so that it is not only functional, but also dialogues with other furniture elements.
Arcom collections offer a variety of bathroom mirrors designed to meet every style demand. Round or oval mirrors, for example, are well suited to traditional and retro bathrooms, while rectangular or contoured ones best interpret a modern style with clean lines and a strong character.
Then there are show-stopping mirrors that combine functionality with shapes and lighting to become an architectural element and create visually impactful wall solutions. One example is our modular mirror: Luna. The following photos show Luna in two different compositions for the washbasin area.
The latest trends also confirm oversized mirrors or full-wall mirrors as being perfect for amplifying light and depth in the room.
But that’s not the only trend: more and more multiple combinations are being used in master bathrooms and in bathrooms with two washbasins, with double or even triple mirrors of all shapes and sizes.
There are many reasons to choose a multiple combination: to give each washbasin its own mirror or, with a staggered installation, to give the wall some dynamic personality. Functional, yes, but also aesthetically pleasing.
Another type is the full-length mirror, such as our Spy: this elegant, vertical mirror has a luminous line emerging from its surface in a shape with rounded corners. The mirror can be installed horizontally over the washbasin or vertically as a full-length mirror.
This second option is perfect for alcoves or free walls, where it becomes a highly impactful functional element, especially when paired with a freestanding washbasin like Uniko, that echoes the momentum and softness of its curves.
The mirror you choose directly influences the style of the bathroom: if you opt for a slim, rectangular mirror, you create a minimalist feel, whereas a more prominent, decorative frame or a soft shape is well suited to a more classical or shabby chic style.
In addition to their shape, the profile of Arcom mirrors can also be personalised: for models with a black frame, like the one shown below, we have 60 lacquered colours to choose from. This style detail lets you pair the mirror with other furnishings, or create an elegant contrast in the bathroom that catches the eye.
Another option is the “shelved mirror”, a solution with less space but more design, with a shelf along the bottom edge of the mirror to keep everything you need visible and within reach.
In a space like the bathroom, where humidity is often present, it’s worth considering mirrors with an integrated anti-fog system, which keeps the surface clear after a shower or bath — just like our Sole and Norma models.
Another smart feature is the built-in magnifying mirror, ideal for precision tasks such as skincare routines or makeup application.
The lighting you choose for your bathroom mirror is another fundamental aspect, as the light source can radically transform the perception of the space and improve its functionality. In a previous article, we looked in depth at how to light the bathroom mirror, offering various design solutions. Here, we will examine integrated solutions that combine aesthetics and function.
Not only does well-designed lighting help you see better, but it elevates the design, creates atmosphere and becomes part of your everyday routine. If you are a fan of dramatic lighting, you will love our backlit mirrors and our mirrors with illuminated frames; both are perfect for creating modern, relaxing and welcoming spaces.
For frontal, bright and direct lighting – ideal for applying makeup, shaving and skincare – LED spotlights installed above the mirror or lights integrated into the design of the mirror itself are ideal, without being visually invasive. These solutions are generally installed at the top or on the sides of the mirror, to ensure your face is evenly lit, without creating shadows.
Another element not to be ignored is the colour temperature of the light: warm light generally creates a sense of comfort for relaxation, while neutral or cold light makes working at the mirror easier. Our most advanced models also offer the option to adjust the light intensity and tonality.
What about tech? Even a mirror can become a smart accessory. Arcom’s Norma and Racee models are just that. These bathroom mirrors have touch switches to turn the light on and off in an easy and intuitive way.
Height, symmetry, light and the relationship with other furnishings are all aspects that should be considered when positioning your mirror in the bathroom.
Carefully considered positioning improves the space’s usability and makes your everyday routines more comfortable and convenient.
Just the right height
The ideal height is one that reflects the face at eye height, with sufficient space above and below the face. As a general rule, we recommend hanging the mirror with the base approximately 110-120 cm from the floor but, of course, this will depend on how tall you are. Mirrors installed above the washbasin should be hung at least 15-20 cm above the countertop.
Alignment and symmetry
The mirror must be centred above the washbasin and the unit beneath it to create a tidy visual effect. If a spotlight or a wall light is installed above the mirror, we recommend centring the elements or, if they are installed beside the mirror, ensuring they are symmetrical, for balanced lighting and to prevent shadows or annoying rays of light.
Horizontal or vertical?
Horizontal mirrors are perfect for long or double vanities: they visually lengthen the space and create a sense of continuity. Vertical mirrors, on the other hand, emphasise the height of the space and enhance small rooms or ones with high ceilings. But most of all, they let you see your entire body.
Natural and artificial lighting
If possible, position the mirror so as to reflect the natural light (opposite or diagonal to the window). Artificial light plays an essential role in bathrooms without windows; in this case, lighting should be adjustable to adapt to different times of day.
There is no single way to imagine the perfect mirror. Choosing a bathroom mirror means finding the right balance between aesthetics, functionality and proportions. It’s important to consider the available space, the amount of natural light and the furniture style. You may find yourself having to choose from a vast array of bathroom mirrors. So how do you select the right mirror? Start with the shape – round, oval, rectangular, contoured or irregular – and then consider the size.
Make sure it’s proportionate to the washbasin, the size of the room and the lighting configuration. Finally, consider personalisation options and lighting solutions. Explore all of Arcom’s solutions in our Accessories catalogue or visit our website
