How to conceal the washing machine in the bathroom environment: 4 (+1) design solutions

The washing machine has become an essential domestic appliance. It simplifies daily life, but can be hard to integrate into interiors unless installed in a dedicated laundry room. In a bathroom, for example, it can become a real challenge to maintain stylish interior design.

But not every home has a separate laundry space and the bathroom is often the room of choice to house the washing machine. This can pose various problems, but don’t worry: modern interior solutions mean that the washing machine can be completely hidden from view.

This article provides 4 (+1) design solutions (space-saving, style-saving and… even life-saving!) to ensure an elegant and tidy bathroom, where the problematic washing machine finds its place without compromising the aesthetic of the entire space.

Why conceal the washing machine in the bathroom?

Washing machines are an undeniably bulky appliance and tend to dominate a space, so the ideal solution is to hide them from view.

Although there are increasingly compact and minimalist models available (even in slim versions), integrating a washing machine into a stylish bathroom can be a challenge. This is why it should be carefully integrated or concealed, utilising great-looking solutions with a practical design.

There are many options for bathrooms, from custom units to alcoves, multipurpose structures and closing mechanisms, to name just a few. In small bathrooms, these are also essential to optimise available space, while in larger bathrooms they can be used to create dedicated laundry areas that are handy and discreet.

With the right solutions, integrating a washing machine into a bathroom without issue is easier than you might think! Here are a few ideas from Arcom…

Ideas and solutions to conceal the washing machine in the bathroom

When buying a washing machine, it is important to consider several factors.

First and foremost, it must be installed in a strategic position in the room, near to plumbing connections, outlet pipes and electrical sockets, as well as being easy to access for loading and use.

This consideration applies in any setting, and even more so when opting for space-saving and style-saving solutions, such as a concealed washing machine. Careful design choices are required to enable integration of these technical elements, creating functional and stylish solutions.

Below are a few ideas that work perfectly not only to conceal a washing machine in a bathroom, but also for other appliances such as a dryer, which is increasingly common in the home. These interior-design solutions transform a bathroom into an organised and harmonious space with a dedicated “laundry corner”.

#1 Washing machine hidden in a base unit

Integrating the washing machine into a furniture unit is a versatile solutions that works in small or large bathrooms. Regardless of the size of the space, this solution completely hides the appliance from view, maintaining the harmony of the bathroom space.

A storage base unit can be used, ideally floor standing, such as those in our Laundry collection, which enables you to make the most of the whole volume of the unit. Alternatively, installation in a bathroom unit with built-in washbasin is also an excellent choice.

#2 Washing machine and dryer hidden in a tall unit

Tall units are one of the most common solutions to conceal a washer and dryer in small bathrooms and long, narrow spaces. This approach optimises use of available space, leaving the rest of the bathroom free. With carefully designed proportions, tall units can house both appliances, washer and dryer, stacked vertically.

This solution is stylish on the outside and functional on the inside, and the space-saving approach works whatever the dimensions of the appliance, with the obvious exception of top-loading models.

The alternative to a wardrobe is an open-shelf column. A solution that is certainly more striking and less discreet.

#3 Washing machine accessible but tucked away

In this case, the washing machine is positioned within a structure that leaves it visible but makes it more discreet, housed in a storage structure that limits the space it takes up and makes its presence less evident. You can see some examples in the photos.

This solution can be used to enclose the washing machine, and other appliances such as a dryer, leaving a handy surface above, ready for practical use. With carefully thought-out design, this sturdy structure works stylistically with the washbasin unit, creating a single, compact element to house appliances side by side.

#4 Washing machine installed in a bathroom alcove

If you need to furnish an alcove in the bathroom, this is the perfect way to do it. You can opt for a storage unit with hinged doors, which is perfect to make appliances completely invisible. These units can be customised with a range of finishes to ensure they fit with other bathroom interiors, for a coherent aesthetic.

Installed “back-to-wall” as illustrated below, this solution offers a minimalist form with highly practical design. In addition to hiding the appliances from view, it also provides a concealed space to store accessories and washing liquids, or for clean and folded linen.

If you don’t want to install furniture into alcoves, you can install appliances in the recess and then close off the space at the front with curtains. This is a simpler solution, and can be considered a DIY option, ideal for bathrooms with a bohemian or more rustic style.

If a washing machine installed in an alcove is left visible, we offer fully equipped “bridge” structures and overhanging structures with a double space for appliances. Here too, the dimensions of the alcove are large enough to leave space for storage.

#5 Washing machine concealed outside the main bathroom

Think not just a bathroom, but a utility area too: the perfect place for storing various items and a perfect corner to hide the washing machine out of view. This area of the home, separate from the main bathroom but just outside it, has the potential to serve as a functional space for the washing machine without impacting the bathroom aesthetic at all.

In this case, custom units or sliding partitions can provide style-saving solutions, keeping everything tidy and out of view. Furthermore, this option technically makes it possible to utilise bathroom plumbing, making installation of appliances simple and practical, without the need for extensive work or altering masonry. An area outside the bathroom can be an excellent space-saving and style-saving solution, both in terms of optimising space and comfort. You can keep the main bathroom free from large appliances and reserved for its primary function, while enjoying the practical benefits of a washing machine or dryer always on hand.

Conclusions

This final idea is a rather special, “extra” interior solution. It may not be possible in every home, as often, particularly in smaller modern homes, there is no utility or laundry area. In these contexts, washing-machine space becomes a resource to be optimised, making the most of every corner of the home.

When it is impossible to install the washing machine outside the bathroom, solutions to integrate it discreetly and elegantly inside the bathroom are essential. Hiding the washing machine or dryer from view in the bathroom using custom units, tall units, washbasin units or specially equipped alcoves ensures a tidy and well-organised space, without compromising on day-to-day practicality.

After all, functionality and stylish design choices can go hand in hand, transforming even the smallest or most unlikely spaces into well-organised environments.
